The San Diego State women's tennis team completed their second day of competition in the ITA West Regional on Friday at the Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma. The Aztecs posted six wins on the day at the end of competition.
Tami Nguyen notched a victory for the Aztecs in the round of 64 in the main singles draw on Friday as she defeated Gabriela Tilikeridisova of Long Beach State, 6-2, 6-3. Olivia Larsson kept the match against Miya Jin of Loyola Marymount close in the first set but ultimately dropped the decision, 7-5, 6-0. Kennedy Davis also had a close first set in her loss to Anna Depenau of San Diego, 7-6, 6-0. First-year Aztec Hailey Johnson posted the second win for San Diego State as she got past Reka Rohonyi of LMU, 7-5, 6-2. Kristin Buth wouldn't be as fortunate as she fell to Akilah James of Arizona, 6-2, 7-5. Senior Laura Antonana Iriarte would begin a successful day with a victory over Sarah Gong of UC Irvine, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Three SDSU players would move onto the round of 32 after their wins in the round of 64. Antonana Iriarte would again take down her opponent, this time it was Giuliana Olmos of USC, 6-4, 6-3. Nguyen couldn't match and fell to Lauren Marker of Arizona, 6-2, 7-5. Johnson would see the same fate as she came up short to Kim Stubbe of Arizona, 6-3, 6-0.
Antonana Iriarte entered the round of 16 on a win streak and ensured that it would continue. The San Sebastian, Spain, native took down Kaitlin Ray of UCLA, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2. Antonana Iriarte will compete in the quarterfinal tomorrow.
In the singles consolation draw, Larsson took Priscila Garcia of UCSB to three sets but couldn't pull out the win, 5-7, 6-0, 10-5. Dora Somoracz came out victorious over Brooke Schweyer of UCI, 6-1, 7-5. Isabelle Hoorn fell to Jessica Perez of LMU, 6-1, 6-1.
Antonana Iriarte and Davis could not match the senior's success from her singles play and dropped their doubles match to Brooke Schweyer Sarah Stadfelt of UCI, 8-1. Hoorn and Nguyen also came up short in their doubles play to Melissa Baker and Stacy Yam of UCSB, 8-6. Larsson and Somoracz would be the only Aztecs to post in win the main doubles draw as they downed Priscila Garcia and Luisa Ortiz of UCSB, 8-4.
The duo of Buth and Johnson were unable to hang on in the lucky loser doubles draw against Holly Reid and Hayley Thompson of Long Beach State, 8-4.
In the lucky loser singles bracket, Davis dropped her match to Michaela Capannolo of Pepperdine, 6-4, 6-2.
