SONOMA, Calif. - In its final tournament of the fall season, the San Diego State men's golf team finds itself in ninth place after recording a combined 2-under par 574 during the first two rounds of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at Sonoma Golf Club. Individually, the Aztecs were led by Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.), who carded a 3-under 141 to tie for the 15th position after 36 holes on the par-72, 7,103-yard layout.
Following an even-par 72 during the opening round, Schauffele got off to a blistering start in the afternoon, draining four birdies over a six-hole stretch en route to a season-low 69. With his performance, the SDSU junior finished with seven birdies on the day compared to just four bogeys and remains three strokes out of the top 10 heading into Tuesday's final round.
In addition, freshman Ricky DeSantis (Carlsbad, Calif.) equaled Schauffele for the Aztecs low score of the day with a 3-under 69 during the morning session. Despite making bogey on his final hole, the Carlsbad High alumnus sank four birdies during the round, including three on his back nine to tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard. DeSantis was unable to sustain the momentum in round two, however, tumbling into the 27th position at 144 after settling for a 75 in the afternoon, which was marred by three bogeys and a triple-bogey on the par-3 No. 4.
Sophomore Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) experienced a similar fate, tying DeSantis for the 27th spot at even-par 144 on rounds of 70-74. The 2012-13 Mountain West Freshman of the Year offset a pair of bogeys with a four birdies during the opening round, including all three of the four par-5 holes for his lowest score of the fall schedule thus far. However, Michelini could not avoid a letdown of his own in the afternoon, slipping 14 places despite totaling just two bogeys over his final 18 holes.
Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.) was also the victim of a precipitous drop, falling 21 spots into tie for 41st at 2-over 146 on rounds of 71-75. The SDSU senior found himself in a tie for 20th after matching his lowest score of the fall in the morning, offsetting three bogeys with four birdies, including one on the par-3 No. 14. However, Kaiser was unable to coax additional birdies out of his putter in the second round, draining just two compared to five bogeys, including three straight on holes 11-13.
Meanwhile, Kevin Ko (Coquitlam, B.C.) sits two shots in back of Kaiser in a tie for 44th at 3-over 147. The Aztec sophomore drained two birdies in both rounds on Monday, finishing with a 73 and 74, respectively.
With three players sitting atop the individual leaderboard, host California (-35) opened up a commanding lead in the team standings over second-place Arizona State (-14) and Oregon (-14), while Brigham Young (-12) and Minnesota (-7) round out the top five. The Golden Bears' Joel Stalter (-11) owns a one-shot advantage over teammates Brandon Hagy (-10) and Pace Johnson (-10) in the race for medalist honors, while Oregon State's David Fink (-8) and Jon Rahm (-8) remain just three shots off the pace in the fourth position.
San Diego State concludes play at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational with final-round action on Tuesday when it tees off with fellow Mountain West rivals Colorado State and Fresno State, along with the University of San Francisco, starting at 8:15 a.m. PT on the 10th hole.
