SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - San Diego State men's tennis junior Thorsten Bertsch (Mannheim, Germany) won two matches in the Battle of the Bay Classic singles tournament on Saturday to advance to Sunday morning's semifinals.
Bertsch, currently ranked No. 114 in the nation, defeated Joakin Nordstrom of Saint Mary's, 6-2, 6-0, in third-round action, before knocking off Santa Clara's John Lamble in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. Bertsch will face California's Andre Goransson in the semifinals on Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. PT.
In addition, Bertsch and senior doubles teammate Hunter Nicholas (Park City, Utah) won two matches on Saturday to reach Sunday's championship round of the doubles bracket. Bertsch and Nicholas topped Pepperdine's duo of Stefan Menichella and David Sofaer, 8-3, in quarterfinal action, before knocking off Boise State's team of Brendan McClain and Garrett Patton, 8-5, in the semifinals.
Bertsch and Nicholas, the No. 1-seed in this weekend's doubles bracket, take on San Francisco's team of Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa, the tournament's No. 2-seed, in the finals on Sunday.
Nicholas lost a close match to Boise State's Thomas Tenreiro, 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (5), in the third round of singles play on Saturday.
