FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - San Diego State concluded play at the Northern Arizona Fiesta Bowl Tournament with a three-set victory (25-23, 25-20, 27-125) over Idaho Saturday afternoon. The win ended a three-match losing streak for the Aztecs, who had dropped a five-set match to Cal State Northridge earlier in the day.
With the win, SDSU evened its 2013 ledger at 3-3 while the Vandals saw their record fall to 3-4. Although San Diego State finished with a mark of 1-2 over the weekend, six of the eleven sets they played were decided by two points with four of those going to extra points.
Michelle Waber led the Aztecs against Idaho with her SDSU career-best 16 kills while also contributing five digs and a block. She was joined in double figures in kills by teammates Summer Nash (13), Raegan Shelton (11) and Emily Harris (10). It marked the fifth time in six outings that Nash reached double figures in kills while she also equaled her career-high with three service aces.
Setter Johnna Fouch, meanwhile, recorded 54 assists to set the tourney record for assists in a three-set match. She added a dozen digs to notch her fourth double-double in six matches this season.
In its opening contest of the day, San Diego State fell to an undefeated CSU Northridge (5-0) squad by set scores of 27-25, 16-25, 20-25, 25-23, 9-15.
Nash's 14 kills was tops among the Aztecs as she also finished with seven digs and a pair of blocks. Shelton added 13 kills with seven digs while Harris had 11 kills, four blocks and a .524 hitting percentage.
In addition, Fouch added a double-double with a 41 assist-14 dig performance and libero Courtney Vaccarello had a team-high 16 digs.
San Diego State now returns home to prepare for its 2013 home opener as it hosts the annual Holiday Inn Mission Valley Aztec Invitational next weekend on Aztec Court at Peterson Gym. SDSU will open play on Friday, Sept. 13, against Harvard at 5:00 p.m. Other tourney participants include San Francisco, SMU and Northeastern.
