SAN DIEGO - After unveiling its 2012 Mountain West Championship banner during pregame ceremonies, the San Diego State volleyball team opened its home conference season with a three-set (25-15, 25-18, 25-13) win over Nevada Saturday night on Aztec Court. With the victory SDSU evened its over record at 6-6 and improved to 1-1 in league play.
Aztec junior Michelle Waber was the lone player on either side to finish in double figures in kills as she recorded 12 along with three blocks. Summer Nash notched eight kills while teammate Emily Harris contributed seven kills and a match-high six blocks.
Setters Johnna Fouch and Chloe Mathis split time on the court and finished with 25 and 12 assists respectively while libero Courtney Vaccarello led all players with 13 digs.
Nevada (2-12, 0-2 MW) was led by Madison Morell with eight kills and Tessa Lea'ea who contributed seven.
San Diego State hit .345 as a team over the three sets while the Wolf Pack ended the evening with a .033 hitting percentage. The Aztecs had the upper hand in all statistical categories including kills (41-25), blocks (10-4) and digs (40-30).
The opening set was an even contest in the early stages before the Aztecs, leading 8-6, reeled off six straight points to take control. Both teams finished with nine kills with the difference coming in the form of eight Wolf Pack attack errors and three team blocks for SDSU. The Aztecs hit .333 as a team in the contest while holding the visitors to a .033 attack percentage.
Set number two was similar as the Aztec led 11-6 before scoring five straight to go up 16-6. Waber had seven kills in the contest and hit .667 while her team recorded five blocks and hit .375.
San Diego State controlled the third set much as it had the first two. Leading 7-5, SDSU scored 11 of the ensuing 14 points to take a commanding 18-8 lead en route to the12-point set win and match victory. Chaiymin Steel led the Aztecs with four kills and a block as SDSU hit .324 in the game compared to .000 for the Wolf Pack.
San Diego State will continue its current three-match home stand next Thursday, Oct. 3, when it hosts Fresno State at 7:00 p.m. on Aztec Court.
