SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's soccer team couldn't overcome a late first-half spurt on Sunday night, as the Aztecs dropped a decision to Florida International, 5-3, at SDSU Sports Deck.
With the victory, FIU wins the Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Soccer Tournament. Senior midfielder Abraham Villon, Senior forward Jordan Ongaro and freshman defender August Wangberg were each named to the all-Tournament Team for the Aztecs.
Florida International scored three goals in the final six minutes of the first half after SDSU took an early lead on a goal by Ongaro. The Aztecs cut the deficit, 3-2, on Villon's goal in the 51st minute, but the Panthers answered with two more scores within a minute of each other late in the second half to build a 5-2 advantage.
Villon finished with two goals for San Diego State, while senior defender Robbie Freise recorded an assist and senior goalkeeper Blake Hylen had two saves. The Aztecs had a 19-12 edge in shots.
SDSU got on top early, as Ongaro's diagonal shot from the right side put the Aztecs in front, 1-0, in the 11th minute. It was San Diego State's sixth-straight unanswered goal to begin the season, after defeating No. 16 USD, 5-0, on Friday.
Villon's unassisted goal on a free kick from 25-yards out early in the second half trimmed FIU's lead to one, and the senior added another unassisted score from the left side through traffic in the 86th minute. The midfielder from Garden Grove, Calif., leads the team with three goals this season, along with a team-high six points.
Florida International tied the score, 1-1, on a goal by freshman Josue Espana from short distance in the 39th minute. Soon after, Panthers forward Gonzalo Frechilla gathered a cross from junior Quentin Albrecht in the middle of the goalie's box and knocked it in from short distance, as SDSU fell behind for the first time this season, 2-1.
Albrecht's header off a free kick by senior Gonzalo Frechilla gave FIU a 3-1 advantage at halftime. Junior Sean McFarlane's goal in the 84th minute extended the Panthers' lead to 4-2, and freshman Luis Betancur's shot from 17 yards out through the upper right corner of the net made it 5-2 in the 86th minute.
The Aztecs return to action on Saturday, Sept. 7, against UC Irvine. The match will be held at SDSU Sports Deck beginning at 7 p.m. PT, and admission is free.
Man of the Match: Senior midfielder Abraham Villon (Garden Grove, Calif.) scored two second-half goals in Sunday nights' loss to Florida International. Villon played 67 minutes on Sunday, and now leads SDSU in goals (3) and points (6) through two games this season.
