SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's soccer team played Trinity Western to a tie in regulation, 1-1, in its Friendly on Wednesday night at SDSU Sports Deck. It was the Aztecs' lone friendly of the season as they prepare for the 2013 campaign.

Redshirt freshman Aaron Thompson's goal in the 78th minute knotted the score just minutes after Trinity Western took the first lead of the night. After sitting out the entire 2012 season, Thompson provided a spark in the second half with his score off a nice assist from senior Jordan Ongaro. Thompson later followed it up with another good shot near the front of the net that was blocked by a Trinity Western defender in the 84th minute.

San Diego State controlled the match for the majority of the night, as the Aztecs finished regulation with a 21-9 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Kody Duff led SDSU with five shots on goal, while junior Evyn Hewett, junior Anthony Gooch and Thompson each had two apiece.

The match remained scoreless throughout the first half and well into the second before Trinity Western senior Jordan Whitehead's goal from the lower-left corner, 12-yards out, in the 74th minute. The Aztecs only allowed the Spartans to accumulate five shots on goal up until that point in the match.

Senior goalkeeper Blake Hylen allowed just one goal while playing the entire 90 minutes of regulation, before giving way to junior Tim Peitsch in the two 10-minute overtime periods. The Aztecs eventually added a goal in the second overtime, as Duff knocked a shot through the net off an assist from freshman Emilio Huerta in the 105th minute.

SDSU will continue preseason training in preparation for its season opener on Friday, Aug. 30, against cross-town foe San Diego in the Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Soccer Tournament. Game time is set for 7 p.m. PT at SDSU Sports Deck. The Aztecs will continue tournament play on Sunday, Sept. 1, against Florida International, also beginning at 7 p.m. PT.

Man of the Match: Senior Kody Duff was named Man of the Match after leading the Aztecs with five shots on goal, and scoring a late goal in the second overtime period. The Roseville, Calif. native played 107 minutes in Wednesday night's friendly, which was the second-most on the team.
