SAN DIEGO - San Diego State rising junior Xander Schauffele (San Diego/Scripps Ranch HS) captured his opening-round match at the 2013 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship Wednesday, defeating Illinois State alumnus Richard Hearden (Green Bay, Wis.), 2&1, at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
With his victory, Schauffele will face Scott Wolfes (St. Simons Island, Ga.) in the round of 32 on Thursday, starting at 9:40 a.m. ET. Wolfes, a rising junior at Georgia Southern, also emerged triumphant in the round of 64 over 2013 Mexican amateur champion Mario Clemens, 2&1, on the par-70, 7,310-yard course layout. If Schauffele gets past Wolfes, he would square off against either Carr Vernon (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) or Oliver Goss (Perth, Australia) in the round of 16, later in the day at 2:15 p.m. ET.
Schauffele, who garnered all-Mountain West Conference accolades in his first season as an Aztec last spring, qualified for U.S. Amateur match play after tying for 17th place during the first two rounds of stroke play earlier in the week with a collective 140 (69-71).
Match play continues at the 113th edition of the U.S. Amateur on Thursday, Friday and Saturday before Sunday's finale, which features the remaining two golfers competing over 36 holes. Live results for the tournament are available on the USGA web site, www.usga.org, while the Golf Channel (Thurs.-Fri.) and NBC (Sat.-Sun.) are providing television coverage.
The Country Club has previously played host to 13 USGA events, including three U.S. Open Championships in 1913, 1963 and 1988.
