SAN DIEGO - San Diego State has placed third in the nation and first in the Mountain West Conference in the Excellence in Management Cup, which annually reviews the most economically efficient athletic departments in Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The study was created by the Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics (LSIA) at Texas A&M University.

The scoring system awards the most points to athletic departments that win conference and national championships, while efficiently allocating money to win the titles. The purpose of the EM Cup is to bring awareness to NCAA athletic departments that are maximizing fiscal resources leading to championship victories.

Because athletic departments across the country differ from one another in size, economic strength and number of opportunities to win championships, the EM Cup results are calculated using a formula that evens the playing field. After finishing as a notable just outside the top 25 in the EM Cup last year, San Diego State won a school-record 12 regular season and tournament conference championships in the 2012-13 athletic year.
