SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Three members of the 2013 San Diego State baseball team were selected on day three of Major League Baseball's first-year player draft on Saturday, June 8. The trio of pitchers Philip Walby (New York Yankees, 12th round) and Ethan Miller (San Francisco Giants, 22nd round) along with catcher Jake Romanski (Boston Red Sox, 14th round) were the three Aztecs taken.
Walby, a junior from San Diego (Scripps Ranch HS), compiled a record of 5-3 with a 3.82 earned run average in his third season at SDSU. He earned all-tourney honors at the Mountain West Tournament in late May when he recorded a pair of wins including a victory in the championship game over No. 13 New Mexico.
Romanski, a senior from Corona, Calif. (Norco HS/Chaffey JC), batted .303 during this past season with nine doubles, three home runs and 33 runs batted in. He was named to the all-Mountain West second team at the conclusion of the regular season. He was also one of 15 semifinalists for the 2013 Johnny Bench Award, presented to the nation's top collegiate catcher.
Miller, a four-year Aztec form Chino Hills, Calif. (Ayala HS), finished the year with a record of 5-3 and a 3.40 earned run average. Working primarily in relief as a senior, he made three appearances over SDSU's six games at the Mountain West Tournament, recording a save in the elimination game against UNLV on May 25 and tossing the final inning in the win over No. 13 New Mexico in the tourney championship contest on May 26.
San Diego State finished the season with a final record of 31-31, its best in the past four seasons. Season highlights included winning the conference tournament for the first time since 2000, making an appearance at the NCAA Regionals for the first time in four years, placing six players on the all-tourney team and having six athletes earn all-Mountain West honors.
