A school-record and Mountain West Conference-high three San Diego State athletic teams earned a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA on Wednesday based on its most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate.
The San Diego State cross country, men's tennis and women's tennis teams all earned multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of each sport for the 2011-12 academic year to earn NCAA recognition.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes both retention at an institution and academic eligibility in its calculation, and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.The effort is part of a public-recognition program the NCAA Division I Board of Directors approved in January 2006.
The San Diego State cross country program received the distinction for the second consecutive year and third time overall. This marks the first APR distinction for the men's tennis and women's tennis programs - both of which won a Mountain West title during the 2012-13 academic year.
The 2011-12 Mountain West Conference, which consisted of eight universities, produced 11 total teams that received the NCAA distinction. San Diego State had a league-high three teams that received the honor. No other school had more than two programs make the list.
This is the third straight year in which San Diego State has placed at least one program on the award list and it marks a new single-season school record for most sport teams to make the list in an academic year.
Full multi-year APR scores for all Division I sports teams will be released by the NCAA next week.
