LAS VEGAS - Allison Reaser captured her third consecutive heptathlon title at the Mountain West Championships to lead the 22nd-ranked San Diego State track and field team Thursday in Las Vegas.
Reaser finished with 5,612 points over the two-day, seven-event heptathlon. Teammate Brittany Bozeman totaled 5,221 points to finish second (No. 9 all-time at SDSU), followed by Wyoming's Jenna Mann (5,200), New Mexico's Samantha Bowe (5,004) and Aztecs' Karsen Sper (4,809).
SDSU sits in first place after the one event with 22 points, 15 more than New Mexico's seven points. Wyoming (6), Nevada (3) and Colorado State (1) round out the top five with 20 events still to be contested over the weekend.
"Each of our women competed with class and dominated in the areas they should have," head coach Shelia Burrell said. "We had a solid first day. We had hoped for a better second day, but overall we are pleased with the outcome.
"Allison Reaser made history by winning three indoor and outdoor championships. Brittany Bozeman stepped up and had her best meet in two years and freshman Karsen Sper is having a great season in her first year doing the heptathlon."
Over the seven events in the heptathlon, Reaser won five, including the long jump and 800 meters today. Reaser has now won three straight outdoor heptathlons (2011 (5,408 pts.), 2012 (5,653 pts.) and 2013 (5,612 pts.)) and three consecutive indoor pentathlons at the MW Championships.
The final day began with the long jump, which was won by Reaser with a wind-aided leap of 19 feet, 4 inches (5.89 meters) for 816 points. Bozeman came in third in a wind-aided 18-07.00 (5.66m) (747 pts.) and Sper was seventh in a wind-aided 17-08.00 (5.38m) (665 pts.).
In the javelin throw, Bozeman came in first with a toss of 130-04 (39.72m) for 662 points. Reaser took third in 116-07 (35.53m) for 582 points and Sper was 12th in 75-01 (22.89m) (343 pts.).
Reaser ended the heptathlon with a win in the 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 19.23 seconds for 834 additional points. Sper (2:23.05 (783 pts.)) and Bozeman (2:27.36 (726 pts.)) finished fourth and eighth, respectively, in collegiate-best times.
Day three of the four-day meet begins at 8 a.m. PT Friday with Marianne Hogan in the 10,000 meters and will conclude with the long jump (Bozeman, Alex Evans, Nicole Oudenaarden and Shanieka Thomas) at 2 p.m. PT.
