LAS VEGAS - San Diego State's Allison Reaser leads the heptathlon after the first day of the Mountain West Track & Field Championships Wednesday in Las Vegas.
Reaser leads the 12 competitors with 3,380 points with four of the seven events completed. Reaser is followed by Wyoming's Jenna Mann and New Mexico's Samantha Bowe, who have 3,176 points and 3,141 points, respectively. Two other Aztecs - Brittany Bozeman (3,086) and Karsen Sper (3,018) - sit in striking distance in fourth and fifth.
Reaser won three of the four events on the first day to open up her 204-point lead. Reaser, who is looking to remain undefeated in the multi-events for her career at the Mountain West Championships (2011-13 pentathlon champion, 2011-12 heptathlon champion), opened the first day with a win in 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.65 seconds into a headwind. That got her 1,028 points. Sper came in third in a personal-best 14.43 (918 pts.) and Bozeman was fifth in 14.61 (894 pts.), which tied a collegiate best.
Next up was the high jump, where Reaser and Sper tied for sixth by clearing 5 feet, 2 ¼ inches (1.58 meters) for 712 points. Bozeman tied for 10th at 5-01.00 (1.55m) and 678 points.
Reaser next won the shot put with a season-best heave of 39-01.00 (11.91m) for 655 points. Bozeman closely followed in second at 38-03.25 (11.66m) (639 pts.) and Sper took eighth with a collegiate-best 33-07.25 (10.24m) (545 pts.).
Reaser closed the day with a dominating victory in the 200 with a wind-aided PR of 23.96 for an additional 986 points. Bozeman was third in a wind-aided PR of 25.13 (875 pts.) and Sper was fourth in a wind-aided best of 25.48 (843 pts.).
The final day of the heptathlon gets underway at 11:30 a.m. PT Thursday with the long jump, followed by the javelin throw and the 800.
