TUCSON, Ariz. - The San Diego State men's golf team shot a 9-under 275 on Saturday to climb into a tie for first place during the second round of the 2013 Mountain West Championships at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Course. The Aztecs, who are seeking their third straight conference title, sit atop the standings with New Mexico at 5-under 563 and are eight strokes in front of third-place UNLV (+3) with 18 holes left to play on the par-71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course.

SDSU took advantage of lighter winds on Saturday to post its lowest round ever in MW championship competition, as three players carded scores in the 60s, including freshman Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), who fired a 68 to vault three places into a share of the lead at 3-under 139, along with New Mexico's Gavin Green and Kevin Penner of UNLV. Despite recording three bogeys on his final five holes, Michelini drained a team-high seven birdies on the day to tie his lowest 18-hole total of the season.

A total of 13 golfers in the 45-man field remain just five shots off the pace on a crowded leaderboard, including the Aztec trio of senior Tom Berry (New Haw, Surrey, England), sophomore Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) and junior James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.). Berry and Schauffele find themselves tied for the fourth spot with Boise State's Taeksoo Kim at 2-under 140, while Holley sits in a four-way tie for 13th at 2-over 144.

Berry finished with a 67 to match John Catlin of New Mexico for the lowest score of the second round, highlighted by four birdies and an eagle on the par-5, 511-yard 10th hole, while Schauffele sank four birdies of his own, including three on the back nine. In addition, Holley offset a trio of bogeys with three birdies en route to a 71 to equal his lowest round of the year thus far.

The SDSU delegation also included junior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.), who is tied for 19th at 5-over 147 after posting a 74 on Saturday.

The MW Championships conclude with final-round action on Sunday, as the Aztecs are slated to tee off with New Mexico and UNLV for the third straight day, starting at 8:40 a.m. PDT.
