RENO, Nev. - Tyler France's two-out RBI single in the top of the 10th inning drove home the winning run as San Diego State edged Nevada, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Peccole Park in Reno. With the victory the Aztecs evened their season record at 23-23 and improved to 13-10 in the Mountain West to maintain a share of second place in the league standings.
Nevada (23-23, 10-13 MW) took the early lead in the contest with single runs in the second and fourth innings off SDSU starting pitcher Ryan Doran to take a 2-0 lead.
San Diego State eventually responded with three runs in the top of the seventh that began with a walk to Evan Potter, who advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a ground out by Matt Muñoz. Greg Allen then reached first on a throwing error by the Wolf Pack third baseman with Potter scoring on the play. An ensuing walk to Tim Zier was followed by a two-run double off the bat of Ryan Muno to give the Aztecs a 3-2 lead.
The Wolf Pack, however, wasted little time in answering with a run in their half of the seventh. That marker came against Doran, who would finish his night at the end of the frame. His final line read seven innings pitched allowing three runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
SDSU senior right-hander Ethan Miller shut out the Wolf Pack in the eighth and ninth as he tossed a pair of one-two-three innings with three strikeouts.
In the top of the 10th, Muno led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Jake Romanski. France then came up with two outs and singled home Muno with the game-winning run.
Freshman closer Bubba Derby came on in the bottom of the inning, allowing a one-out runner on a hit by pitch before getting the final two outs on a grounder and strikeout. Miller was credited with the win to improve to 5-3 while Derby notched his 10th save of the season.
San Diego State and Nevada will play the rubber game of their three-game series on Sunday May 5) at 1:00 p.m. at the Wolf Pack's Peccole Park.
