PULLMAN, Wash. - The San Diego State men's golf team is currently tied for fifth place after firing a collective 293 on Friday during the second round of the NCAA Pullman Regional at Palouse Ridge Golf Club on the campus of Washington State University.

The Aztecs slipped two spots from the previous day into a tie with Pacific at 13-under 563, two strokes behind TCU (-15) for fourth place and six shots in back of third-place Saint Mary's (-19), as the top five schools and low individual not on a qualifying team from each of the six regional tournaments advance to the NCAA Championships, May 28-June 2, in Alpharetta, Ga.

Individually, SDSU was led by Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), who jumped nine places into a tie for sixth at 7-under 137 after carding a second-round 70 on the par-72, 7,308-yard course layout. The 2013 Mountain West Conference freshman of the year was the lone Aztec to post a red figure on Friday, overcoming a bogey on No. 13 and a double-bogey on the 16th with a team-high five birdies, including three on the back nine.

On the flip side, SDSU's Tom Berry (New Haw, Surrey, England) was unable to duplicate his opening-round 66, dropping eight spots into a tie for 15th at 4-under 140 after settling for a 74 on Friday. Despite recording 13 pars and sinking three birdies, the Aztec senior was plagued by a double-bogey on No. 1, followed by a triple-bogey at No. 8, both par-4 holes.

Similarly, James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) experienced tough sledding during the second round, tumbling out of a share of eighth place with Berry into a tie for 29th at 2-under 142. After posting his collegiate-low of 66 over the first 18 holes, the SDSU junior struggled to a 76 on Friday. Despite the frustration, Holley, who was 5-over through 12 holes, closed with some momentum, carding five consecutive pars along with a birdie on No. 18.

Meanwhile, Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) was poised to make a move up the leaderboard, but a second-round 75 thwarted his advance. Following a double-bogey on No. 7, the Aztec sophomore alternated a three pars and a pair of birdies over the next five holes to get back to even, before suffering a bogey at No. 13 and another double-bogey on the 18th. With his round, Schauffele slipped from the 36th position into a tie for 49th at 2-over 146.

SDSU was also represented by junior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.), whose 74 on Friday counted towards the Aztecs' team score. Kaiser climbed four places into a tie for 57th at 4-over 148, as a pair of birdies on holes 14 and 17 helped salve the sting of four bogeys.

Top-ranked California (-35) maintained its perch atop the team standings, while USC (-24) sits in a distant second, followed by Saint Mary's, TCU, SDSU and Pacific. After shooting a course-record 62 on Thursday, USC's Sam Smith (-18) fired a 64 during the second round to open up a six-stroke advantage over Michael Stewart of California (-12), while the Golden Bears' Joel Stalter (-11), Mac McClung of Saint Mary's (-9) and Pacific's Eric Sugimoto (-9) round out the top five.

The NCAA Pullman Regional concludes with final-round action on Friday, as San Diego State is scheduled to tee off with Pacific and TCU on hole No. 1, beginning at 7:50 a.m. PDT. The Aztecs need to post a top-five finish to advance to the NCAA Championships for the third straight season.
