PULLMAN, Wash. - San Diego State's Tom Berry (New Haw, Surrey, England) and James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) find themselves tied for eighth place on the individual leaderboard after each fired a 6-under 66 on Thursday during the opening round of the NCAA Pullman Regional at Palouse Ridge Golf Club on the campus of Washington State University.

As a team, the Aztecs posted a season-low total of 18-under 270 on the par-72, 7,308-yard layout, finishing the day in the third position, three strokes behind second-place Saint Mary's (-21) and five shots behind front-runner California (-23).

Round one quickly evolved into a scoring bonanza, as evidenced by Berry, who carded one of SDSU's four eagles on the day after his second shot on the par-4, 463-yard first hole found the bottom of the cup. The SDSU senior also added four birdies, including three over his final four holes to tie his lowest round of the season. Not to be outdone, Holley matched Berry with his collegiate-best score, as the Aztec junior sank four birdies of his own to go with an eagle on the par-5, 540-yard ninth hole. With their performances, Berry and Holley sit just four shots off the pace heading into Friday's second round.

Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) and Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) also managed to break par for SDSU, as 48 golfers in the 75-man field finished in red figures on Thursday. Michelini recorded his lowest round of the year with a 67, highlighted by an eagle at No. 9, to tie for 15th. The 2013 Mountain West Freshman of the Year drained four birdies as well, including three on his last four holes, to offset his lone blemish of the day, a bogey on No. 3.

Schauffele, meanwhile, completed the opening round with a 71, overcoming a pair of bogeys with an eagle on the par-5, 540-yard fifth hole followed by a birdie on No. 17. The Aztec sophomore also made 14 pars, finishing in a tie for 36th on the day. Rounding out the SDSU delegation was junior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.), who finds himself tied for 64th after carding a 74.

USC's Sam Smith shot a Palouse Ridge record of 10-under 62 to grab a one-stroke lead over Mac McClung of Saint Mary's (-9), whose 63 tied a school -low total for 18 holes, while five players are tied for third at 7-under.

The NCAA Pullman Regional resumes with second-round action on Friday, as the Aztecs are slated to tee off with California and Saint Mary's on hole No. 1, beginning at 9:15 a.m. PDT.
