The San Diego State softball team clinched the outright Mountain West title with a 7-0 victory over UNLV Friday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs improved to 34-18 overall and 12-5 in league play with the win, while the Rebels dropped to 21-30 and 7-10.
SDSU, which earns the league's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament, has now won the MW six times (2002-03, 2006, 2008, 2012-13).
Junior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, and freshman left-hander Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) and senior right-hander Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) combined in the circle on a five-hit shutout.
Bauer had an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning and a three-run homer to cap a five-run sixth inning for San Diego State. Bauer, who also scored two runs and drew a walk, now has 49 RBIs on the season, which ties 2012 All-American Hayley Miles' record set last year.
Senior Tiffany Corder (San Clemente, Calif.) was 3-for-4 with two runs and junior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) had an RBI single, a run and two walks. Senior Kristin May (Corona, Calif.) also added an RBI for the Aztecs.
O'Toole (14-6) tossed six scoreless innings, allowing four singles, including two bunt hits, and a walk. She struck out four. Arbino gave up one hit in the seventh inning.
The conference championship was the SDSU athletic department's 10th of the 2012-13 year (also women's soccer (regular season and tournament), football, volleyball, swimming & diving, women's basketball (regular season), indoor track & field, men's tennis (regular season) and women's tennis (regular season)). Softball will also be the ninth San Diego State team to advance to an NCAA tournament.
The Aztecs and UNLV wrap-up the three-game series at 1 p.m. PT Saturday, followed by a special ceremony honoring their four seniors - Arbino, Corder, Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) and Kristin May.
NOTES: SDSU has won consecutive league championships for the first time since 2002-03 ... Either San Diego State or Brigham Young has won every Mountain West championship since 2005 ... The Aztecs improved to 52-37 all-time against the Rebels, including a 21-6 mark since 2006 (11-1 in San Diego since 2006) ... SDSU improved to 17-5 at home, 19-5 in night games, 29-6 when scoring first, 28-3 when outhitting its opponent, 25-2 when leading after five innings, 34-8 when leading at any point in the game and 21-5 when they hit at least one homer ... DP Lorena Bauer extended her team highs in multi-hit games (22), multi-RBI games (13), game-winning RBIs (11) and go-ahead RBIs (19) ... Bauer's two hits give her 67 for the year, which ranks in a tie for fifth among the program single-season leaders ... The Aztecs improved to 11-1 this season when Bauer homers ... 2B Tiffany Corder had her fourth multi-hit game of the year and third multi-run contest ... LHP Danielle O'Toole improved to 14-6 (.700), which ranks as the fifth-best record in SDSU single-season history and second among freshmen.
