PHILADELPHIA - The San Diego State rowing squad capped its 2012-13 season Friday at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa. The Aztecs sent their Varsity and Junior Varsity 8 crews, which competed on the Schuykill River.
In the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, the Varsity 8 finished in fourth place while occupying Lane 1. SDSU clocked in at 7 minutes, 1.742 seconds, which was behind Purdue (6:42.504), Colgate (6:47.536) and Duquesne (6:54.032), but ahead of Penn State (7:18.618).
The Aztecs' fourth-place effort was not enough to get them to the semifinals and instead was placed in the repechage where the top three advance to the semis. In the rep, Jennifer Miller, Chelsee Brewster, Kate Raymond, Julia Brockherde, Vera Brockherde, Kaitlyn Goss, Vivianna Smith, Romaine Desclos and Elizabeth West rowed to a fifth-place finish (7:19.636) to complete their day. Temple (6:56.708), George Mason (7:04.372), Middlebury (7:05.260) and Villanova (7:12.010) all crossed the finish line before SDSU. Sacred Heart, meanwhile, came in sixth place (8:00.530).
The Junior Varsity 8, which consisted of Courtney Siemsen, Cassie Wilson, Mackenzie Morgan, Sarah Hultin, Peggy Tio, Michaela Gentosi, Miranda Orsinelli-Rivers, Veronica McLean and Lindsay Hillman, finished just short of advancing to the final. In a race where the top two move on to the final, the Aztecs came in fourth place with a time of 7 minutes, 10.209 seconds. Bucknell (6:55.387) and Temple 6:55.475) secured spots in the championship. Fordham was the third team ahead of San Diego State at 7 seconds, 6.765 seconds. Marist (7:18.835) and Pittsburgh (7:40.745), meanwhile, finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
