SAN DIEGO -
The San Diego State rowing team completed the first of two days at the 40th annual San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday. The prestigious event, held on the Crown Point Shores on Mission Bay began at 7:20 am and includes teams from around the world.
The Aztecs' first race came at 8:40 am in the Women's Collegiate Varsity Cal Cup event. SDSU rowed in the second heat and came in sixth place with a time of seven minutes, .94 seconds. San Diego State will move onto race in the petite final tomorrow at 9 am against Kansas State, St. Joseph's, SMU, Old Dominion and Sacramento State.
"The Crew Classic is a great regatta for us to get out and race against several other teams from all over the country," said head coach Alison Abrams. "Our second Varsity 8 and both of our Varsity 4's made great adjustments in their race plan for their respective finals. It was especially exciting to see Kate Raymond stroke our Varsity 4+ B. She incurred a serious concussion in fall 2012 so this was her first race since last spring."
SDSU saw action again in the Women's Collegiate 4+ race that got underway at 9:40 am. The Aztecs finished with a time of 8:05.10. The Women's Collegiate 4+ B race, which began at 9:50 am, saw the Aztecs finish with a time of 8:26.46. Both of SDSU's Varsity 4's advanced to the third final which was held at 4:40 pm. The SDSU A boat finished with a time of 8:08.21, while the SDSU B boat finished at 8:28.29.
The Women's Collegiate Second Varsity race took place at 11 am. San Diego State finished sixth in the race with a time of 7:43.24. The time was enough to advance the boat to the third final later Saturday afternoon. The Aztecs rowed into fifth place in the final with a time of 7:24.74.
The final race of the morning for San Diego State was the Women's Collegiate Novice contest. The SDSU A boat finished fifth with a time of 7:33.84 and narrowly missed the mark to advance to the petite final. Also in the novice race was the SDSU B boat which finished with a time of 7:56.49.
