TEMPE, Ariz. - - The San Diego State men's golf team finds itself in a tie for fourth place with a 36-hole total of 2-under 566 following Saturday's second round at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. The Aztecs began the day in second place, but slipped two spots after posting a combined 1-over 284 on the par-71, 7,013-yard Karsten Golf Course.

Individually, sophomore Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) recorded SDSU's lowest round of the day with a 3-under 68 to vault 20 places into a tie for eighth at 2-under 142, along with teammate Tom Berry (New Haw, Surrey, England), who fired a second-round 74. Schauffele drained a team-high five birdies to go with 10 pars and two bogeys, matching his second-best score of the season in the process. Berry, meanwhile, who was tied for second after shooting an opening-round 66, was unable to overcome four bogeys on Saturday, sinking just one birdie to slip six spots on the leaderboard.

In addition, junior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.) logged his second straight 71 to tie for the 17th position at even-par 142. Despite notching a pair of bogeys, including one on his final hole, Kaiser made 14 pars and two birdies on the day to remain in the individual top 20.

Elsewhere, junior James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) settled for a 73 on Saturday, dropping nine slots into tie for 37th at 3-over 145. After back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 2 and 3, Kaiser battled back with five pars and three birdies to move to 1-under for the day, only to see his momentum derailed by four bogeys on his final seven holes.

Rounding out the SDSU starting lineup was freshman Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), who trimmed three strokes off his opening round with a 73 on Saturday to climb nine places into a tie for 60th at 7-over 149. Despite making eagle on the par-5 17th to reach even-par for the day, Michelini finished with a disappointing double-bogey on his final hole.

The Aztecs were also represented by freshman Kevin Ko (Coquitlam, B.C.), who is playing as an individual in the tournament. Ko shook off an opening-round 80 with a solid 71, featuring two birdies, to move 15 spots into a tie for 79th at 9-over 151.

New Mexico (-6) owns a two-shot lead in the team standings over Oregon State (-4) and the University of San Diego (-4), while SDSU, UNLV and California are all tied for fourth at 2-under for the tournament.

Similarly, Nick Chianello (-10) of Oregon State maintained his perch atop the individual leaderboard with a two-stroke edge over Iowa State's Scott Fernandez (-8) and a three-shot advantage over Brandon Nagy of California (-7), both of whom carded a 65 on Saturday to stay in contention.

The ASU Thunderbird Invitational concludes on Sunday with final-round action, as SDSU is slated to tee off with New Mexico State, California and Arizona on hole No. 1, starting at 8:17 a.m. PDT.
