TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Tom Berry (New Haw, Surrey, England) fired a 5-under 66 on Friday to lead the San Diego State men's golf squad during the first round of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. As a team, the Aztecs are in second place after shooting a collective 3-under 281, trailing leader New Mexico by just five strokes on the par-71, 7,013-yard Karsten Golf Course.

Berry carded his lowest score of the 2012-13 campaign during the first round, draining a team-high six birdies to go with an eagle on the par-5 14th hole. With his effort, Berry currently sits in a tie for second place out of 100 players with Victor Perez of New Mexico, two shots in back of Oregon State's Nick Chianello, who shot an opening-round 64.

In addition, junior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.) finds himself in a tie for 16th with 10 other golfers at even-par 71. Kaiser weathered a tough stretch of three consecutive bogeys on holes 6-8, before rebounding nicely with three birdies and seven pars.

Meanwhile, junior James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) and sophomore Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) are both tied for the 28th position at 1-over 72, one stroke in back of Kaiser. Holley managed to offset five bogeys with nine pars and four birdies, while Schauffele finished strong with five pars and three birdies of his own.

The Aztec starting lineup also included freshman Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), who tied for 69th after posting an opening-round 76, while fellow classmate Kevin Ko (Coquitlam, B.C.), who is competing as an individual, carded an 80 to tie for 93rd.

The ASU Thunderbird Invitational resumes on Saturday with second-round action, as SDSU is scheduled to tee off with New Mexico, California and UNLV on hole No. 1, starting at 9:05 a.m. PDT.
