COLUMBUS, Ohio - The San Diego State Lacrosse team fell behind in the first half and couldn't catch up, as the Aztecs lost to Ohio State, 19-11, on Wednesday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
Sophomore Bailey Ewing led SDSU with three goals, while sophomore Lauren Maack finished with two goals and four assists, and sophomores Michaela Jarvis and Grace Korandovich scored two goals apiece. In addition, junior Christina Ricciardulli recorded three groundballs and three draw controls, Korandovich recorded five draw controls and senior goalkeeper Sammy Slattery finished with eight saves.
After a good start for the Aztecs (7-4, 2-1 MPSF), the Buckeyes began to pull away from them midway through the first half. Sophomore Sophie Koubek's goal cut OSU's lead to 3-2 with 19:20 left before intermission, but the Buckeyes went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead, 9-2, with 9:44 to go in the half. Maack scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the half, and Korandovich added another, but Kaila Gottlick's score with seven seconds remaining in the half put SDSU behind, 12-5, at halftime.
The Aztecs stormed out on a 4-0 run to begin the second half behind three goals from Ewing and one from Korandovich to pull within 12-9 with 25:10 left. After a score by Jarvis made it 13-10, OSU went on a 4-0 run to pull ahead, 18-10, and put the game out of reach.
Leading scorer Katie Chase scored four goals for OSU (5-6, 0-2 ALC), while Kelsea Ayers had three goals. Buckeyes' points leader Jackie Cifarelli had two goals with three assists, and Kara Facchina scored two goals with two assists. The Aztecs had an 18-14 edge in draw controls, but the Buckeyes finished with a 15-10 advantage in groundballs. SDSU outshot OSU in the second half (15-12), but were outshot for the game 31-26.
SDSU returns to action on the road on Saturday, as the Aztecs resume MPSF play against Fresno State, beginning at 1 p.m. PT.
