SACRAMENTO - On Sunday, the San Diego State rowing team claimed second place overall at the WIRA Championships. The Aztecs finished behind Gonzaga in the overall cumulative women's team trophy points. SDSU also had two athletes honored for their performances over the two-day event.
The morning's action started with the Varsity 4 competition at 8:10 am. San Diego State crossed the finish line in time to take the silver medal, with a mark of eight minutes, 11 seconds, finishing just 0.6 seconds ahead of Loyola Marymount.
Following the Varsity 4, the Second Novice 8 event got underway at 9:20 am. The Aztecs came in second to claim a silver medal finish in as many races on the day and clocked in at 7:22.0 The SDSU crew came in just two seconds behind host Sacramento State.
The third Aztec boat to race on the day brought the silver medal count to three as the Novice 8 crew came in behind Gonzaga with a time of 7:07.2. The Second Varsity 8 entry earned a bronze medal by posting a time of 7:10.5, finishing behind Gonzaga and Sacramento State.
The final event of the day came in the petite final for the Varsity 8 boats. San Diego State finished first in the race to claim seventh place overall with a time of 7:19.5.
In addition to finishing second in the overall point total, Kate Raymond and Chandler Cole were each named to the All-WIRA Second Team for their performances in the Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4, respectively.
"This was a very exciting weekend for our entire team," said head coach Alison Abrams. "Each boat raced hard for their respective finish as well as the team points trophy. We cannot wait to come out and display strong performances as a team next year when we join Conference USA."
Up next, the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 crews will travel to Philadelphia to compete at the Dad Vail regatta May 10-11.
