RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - San Diego State's Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) is currently tied for second place after firing a 2-over 74 on Thursday to lead the Aztec women's golf team during the opening round of the 2013 Mountain West Championships at Mission Hills Country Club.
With her performance, the SDSU freshman occupies the No. 2 position on the individual leaderboard with Fresno State's Shaylee Yano, just one shot behind front-runner Emily Roering of Colorado State (+1) on the par-72, 6,324-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course.
As a team, the Aztecs are in third place through day one of the 54-hole event after shooting a combined 24-over 312, two strokes behind Boise State (+22) and six shots in back first-round leader Fresno State (+18).
Despite carding five bogeys on the afternoon, Henrikson still drained a team-high three birdies to go with 10 pars, making her MW tournament debut a success.
In addition, SDSU's Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.) cracked the top 10 in her first-ever conference championship appearance, tying for sixth place with three other players at 4-over 76. Even with a double-bogey on the difficult 18th hole, the Aztec sophomore sank two birdies and posted a team-best 11 pars on the day, which marks the second-highest total of tournament thus far.
Meanwhile, reigning MW golfer of the year Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) finds herself in a four-way tie for 13th after logging a 78 on Thursday. The SDSU senior recorded two birdies and eight pars; however, eight bogeys thwarted her progress up the leaderboard. Still, Wong remains five shots off the pace with two rounds left to play.
Elsewhere, sophomore Kristina Lynn (Carlsbad, Calif.) landed in a tie for the 29th position after shooting an 84, while fellow classmate Amy Alston (Mission Viejo, Calif.) struggled during her opening round, finishing with a 92.
The MW Championships resume with second-round action on Friday, as SDSU is slated to tee off with Boise State and Fresno State beginning at 9:10 a.m. PDT.
