SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State Women's Lacrosse team travels to Northern California this weekend for two important road games, as the Aztecs take on Mountain Pacific Sports Federation foes UC Davis on Friday at 5 p.m. PT, and No. 15 Stanford on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT.
SDSU (8-5, 3-2 MPSF) is currently fourth in the MPSF standings, one spot behind Stanford (8-4, 3-1) and just ahead of USC (6-9, 3-3). Stanford plays host to Oregon on Friday, while USC plays host to Fresno State on Saturday. The top four teams advance to the MPSF Championships May 2 and May 4 in Eugene, Ore.
The Aztecs are coming off a home loss to first-place Cal, 13-11, on Sunday. SDSU led with just over eight minutes remaining before Cal (9-4, 6-0) finished the game on a 5-2 run. Sophomore Bailey Ewing led the Aztecs with three goals, sophomore Michaela Jarvis finished with a goal and three assists, and sophomore Lauren Maack and junior Christina Ricciardulli scored two goals apiece.
SDSU still has some impressive individual and team statistics, both in conference and nationally. As of Monday, Jarvis is tied for 19th in the nation in points per game (4.31), while her 34 assists are 11th in the country and 10th in assists per game (2.62). The sophomore from Annapolis, Md., is second in the conference in assists per game and fifth in points per game, while Ewing is fifth in goals per game (2.85).
As a team, the Aztecs are 11th in the nation in points (280), seventh in goals per game (14.54), 13th in scoring margin (5.08) and eighth in draw controls per game (14.46). They lead the MPSF in goals per game, points per game (21.54), assists per game (7), shot percentage (.499) and have the fewest turnovers per game (12.08). SDSU is also second in the conference in draw controls and shots on goal per game (23.54).
UC Davis is 4-8 overall this season and 1-4 in MPSF play. The Aggies are coming off a road victory at Fresno State, 15-6, on Saturday to snap a three-game losing streak. However, two of their losses were to ranked teams (No. 14 Navy and No. 11 Denver), as they went 2-3 on a five-game road trip. Senior Elizabeth Datino leads UCD in goals (36), assists (19), and points (55), and is also 12th in the nation in points. In addition, senior Hannah Mirza has a team-high 42 draw controls and is tied for the team lead in caused turnovers (9).
Stanford is coming off a road loss at No. 4 Northwestern, 12-8, on Sunday. The Cardinal are led by Rachel Ozer, who has a team-high 31 goals, 15 assists and 46 points. As a team, Stanford leads the nation in draw controls per game (15.42), is 10th in scoring offense (13.92) and is 11th in caused turnovers per game (10.08)
