SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - San Diego State sophomore Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) carded a 2-under 68 on Sunday to lead the Aztec men's golf team during the final round of the 67th annual Western Intercollegiate at the par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club. With his performance, Schauffele recorded his third top-five finish of the season after climbing eight spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for fourth place with two other players.

As a team, SDSU slipped one notch into fifth after firing a collective 372 over the final 18 holes for a three-round total of 40-over 1090, five shots behind Washington (+35) and nine strokes in back of third-place Stanford (+31). Meanwhile, California (+1) shot a blistering 10-under 340 on the day to overtake UCLA (+14) for the team title.

Schauffele was the lone Aztec to post red figures on Sunday, offsetting four bogeys with three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole to finish with a combined 1-under 209, along with UCLA's Pontus Widegren and his unattached teammate Lorens Chan. The Bruins' Pedro Figueiredo (-6) took home medalist honors after edging the Cal duo of Max Homa (-4) and Michael Kim (-4).

In addition to Schauffele's effort, SDSU had two other golfers land in the individual top 20, as senior Tom Berry (New Haw, Surrey, England) moved up one slot in the 16th position at 4-over 214, one shot ahead of freshman Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), who tied for 17th at 5-over 215. Berry fired a final-round 71, making 13 pars and three birdies, but two double bogeys thwarted his progress up the leaderboard. Michelini, meanwhile, dropped from a third-place tie after his score ballooned to a 78 over the final 18 holes.

Freshman Robert Gojuangco (San Diego, Calif.) experienced a similar fate, falling from the 41st position into a tie for 59th at 16-over 226 after posting a final-round 79. Junior James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) finished one stroke in back of Gojuangco, tying for the 63rd spot at 17-over 227 after recording his second-straight 77.

The Aztec contingent also included junior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.), who logged a 78 on Sunday to tie for 68th at 19-over 229.

SDSU will have nearly three weeks to prepare for the Mountain West championships, scheduled for May 3-5, at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.
