SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - San Diego State's Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) carded a 3-under par 137 on Saturday to lead the Aztec men's golf team during the first two rounds of the 67th annual Western Intercollegiate at the par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club. With his effort, the SDSU freshman is just two shots off the pace in a three-way tie for third place on the individual leaderboard heading into Sunday's final round.

In the team standings, the Aztecs occupy the fourth position after shooting a combined 18-over 718 (349-369) in the six-man tournament, just one shot behind Stanford (+17) and six strokes in back of California (+11), while UCLA (+2) leads the field of 14 schools.

Michelini tied his lowest score of the season with an opening-round 68, highlighted by three birdies and an eagle, before sinking three additional birdies during the afternoon to finish with a 69. UCLA's Pontus Widegren (-5) and Pedro Figueiredo (-4) own the top two individual spots, followed closely by the trio of Michelini, Sam Smith of USC and Lorens Chan, an unattached golfer from UCLA.

Two other SDSU players are among the individual top 20 after 36 holes of action, as sophomore Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) landed in a tie for 12th at 1-over 141, while senior Tom Berry (New Haw, Surrey, England) finds himself knotted with five other competitors in the 17th position at 3-over 143.

Schauffele logged the Aztecs' best round of the day with a 67 during the morning session, featuring an eagle and a trio of birdies, but was unable to maintain the momentum in the second round, suffering a triple-bogey on the par-4 10th en route to a 71. Berry, meanwhile, posted scores of 70 and 73, highlighted by a team-best seven birdies to go with an eagle on his fourth hole of round one, the par-5 sixth.

Freshman Robert Gojuangco (San Diego, Calif.) also made eagle on the same hole during his opening round and drained three birdies on the way to a 71, but stumbled to a 76 in the afternoon to wind up in a tie for 41st at 7-over 147.

Rounding out the SDSU lineup were juniors James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) and Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.). Holley, who recorded the Aztecs' fifth eagle of the first round on the par-5 13 hole, carded scores of 73 and 77 to tie for 57th at 10-over 150, while Kaiser ended the day in a tie for the 62nd spot at 11-over 151 on rounds of 73 and 78.

The Western Intercollegiate concludes on Sunday with final-round action, as SDSU is slated to tee off with Stanford on holes 3-5 in a shotgun start, beginning at 8:15 a.m. PDT.
