FULLERTON, Calif. - The San Diego State softball team downed Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, Wednesday night in Fullerton, Calif. The Aztecs, who are receiving votes in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, improved to 26-13 with the win, while the Titans dropped to 16-23.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the top of the seventh, SDSU freshman Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) kept the inning alive with a two-out infield single. Classmate Monica Downey (San Diego/Madison HS) followed with a single that skipped past CSUF centerfielder Ashley Carter and allowed Ruiz to score with the go-ahead run.

Senior Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) then retired Cal State Fullerton in order in the bottom of the seventh, including two via strikeout, to seal the victory for San Diego State.

Arbino (15-8) allowed just one run on four hits and no walks over seven innings, while striking out nine. The only run she allowed came in the sixth when Samantha Galarza's two-out single scored Carter.

San Diego State got on the scoreboard in the fifth as a single by Downey scored junior Stefani Polonia (Pico Rivera, Calif./Towson Univ.).

Downey's two hits paced the Aztec offense, while sophomore Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) singled and had two walks. Senior Kristin May (Corona, Calif.) added her 10th double of the season.

SDSU continues its nine-game road trip Saturday when it travels to UC Riverside at noon PT.

NOTES: San Diego State has won 14 of its last 15 games ... The Aztecs won for just the second time in eight one-run games (2-6) ... SDSU improved to a remarkable 25-6 when scoring just two or more runs ... San Diego State is also 23-5 when scoring first, 19-0 when leading after five innings, 26-6 when leading at any point in the game and 23-2 when it outhits its opponent ... SS Monica Downey recorded her fifth multi-hit game of the season and first go-ahead RBI ... 3B Leia Ruiz scored her second game-winning run of the year.
