SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State Lacrosse team had a lead late in the second half, but couldn't hold on as La Salle rallied for a victory over the Aztecs, 14-13, on Friday night at Aztec Lacrosse Field.
Sophomore Bailey Ewing scored four goals for the Aztecs (2-2, 1-0 MPSF), while junior Meris Walsh added three scores. Sophomore Catherine Shepardson finished with two goals, the second of which put SDSU ahead, 12-9, with 15:26 remaining. After Isabelle Pickett's score pushed the Aztecs' lead back to three, 13-10, with 8:46 left, La Salle scored the game's final four goals and kept the ball away from SDSU during the final two minutes.
Lauren McDermott scored the final two goals for the Explorers (6-1). Her free-position goal knotted the score, 13-13, before her goal less than a minute later put La Salle on top for good, 14-13, with 4:25 left. Caitlyn Brostrand led La Salle with four goals and McDermott had three.
The game was tied at halftime, 7-7, and was close throughout the night. Senior goalkeeper Sammy Slattery recorded six saves for the Aztecs, while Christina Ricciardulli and Alexa Comfort each caused two turnovers, and Shepardson scooped up two ground balls.
The Aztecs return to the field on Sunday afternoon when they play host to LIU Brooklyn, beginning at 1 p.m. at Aztec Lacrosse Field. The Blackbirds are 0-4 this season.
