STANFORD, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf team made slight progress during the second round of the U.S. Intercollegiate on Friday, climbing one spot into 15th place after shooting an 8-over 288 on the par-70, 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course. Despite the modest gain, the Aztecs, who sit at 17-over 577 for the tournament, are only six shots from cracking the top 10 heading into Saturday's final round.

Sophomore Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) carded SDSU's lowest score of the day with an even-par 70, offsetting two bogeys with a pair of birdies on the back nine to jump eight places into a tie for 23rd at 1-over 141.

Meanwhile, senior Tom Berry (New Haw, Surrey, England) and freshman Kevin Ko (Coquitlam, B.C.) find themselves two strokes behind Schauffele in a tie for 33rd at 3-over 143. Berry vaulted 16 places after firing a 1-over 72, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 No. 1. However, Ko experienced a reversal of fortune, dropping eight spots after notching a second-round 73, which included two birdies and five bogeys.

Despite recording six bogeys on the day, junior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.) managed to shave a pair of shots off his first-round total, logging a 4-over 74 to tie for 81st at 10-over 150, while freshman Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) is tied for 87th with a combined 12-over 152 after settling for his second straight 76 on Friday.

In the team standings, host Stanford (-17) shot a blazing 9-under 271 during the second round to open an 11-stroke lead over second-place TCU (-6), followed by Saint Mary's (-1) and the University of San Francisco (-1), while Oregon (+5) sits in a distant fifth.

Individually, Stanford's Patrick Rodgers (-8) and Paul Barjon of TCU (-8) each carded a second-straight 66 on Friday to maintain a share of the top spot, four shots ahead of the Cardinal's Cameron Wilson (-4) and Erik Van Rooyen of Minnesota (-4), while David Boote (-3), another Stanford player, is tied for fifth with USF's Cory McElyea (-3).

SDSU wraps up competition at the U.S. Intercollegiate on Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. PT.
