SAN DIEGO - Senior Kristin May (Corona, Calif.) drove in three of San Diego State's four runs in a 4-1 victory over Utah State Saturday night at SDSU Softball Stadium.
May had a double and three RBIs and is now 6-for-10 (.600) with three doubles and six RBIs at this weekend's San Diego Classic I.
The Aztecs (10-8) scored three in the top of the first inning, all with two outs. Junior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) got SDSU on the scoreboard when her double off the right-center field wall scored classmate Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) from second base. Later in the inning, May laced a double to left field to plate Bauer and junior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.).
The Aggies (0-18) got one back in the sixth as Jolene Koons stole third base and scored on a San Diego State throwing error.
The Aztecs scored the final run of the game in the seventh as May drove in her older twin sister Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) on a groundout.
Bauer, Jackson, redshirt freshman Victoria Kobold (Concord, Calif.) and Mathis (also a walk) all had two hits apiece for SDSU, which outhit USU, 12-5, for the game. Sophomore Kaitlin Connors (San Diego/La Costa Canyon HS) singled and added two walks for the victors.
Freshman left-hander Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) picked up the win after allowing one unearned run on five hits and a walk over six innings. She struck out six to improve to 4-4. Senior right-hander Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) tossed a perfect seventh inning to earn her first save of the season.
Prior to the game, Carla Schueler, a cancer survivor, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Additionally, the Aztec coaching staff of Kathy Van Wyk (head coach), Stacey Nuveman Deniz (assistant head coach), Mia Longfellow (assistant coach) and Steve Miner (volunteer coach) were given a special community service award by Kathy Howa, the president and co-founder of Swing for Life, for helping to raise over $10,000 over the past five years for breast cancer research.
San Diego State wraps up the San Diego Classic I at 2 p.m. PT Sunday against No. 12/10 UCLA.
