TUCSON, Ariz. - The San Diego State men's golf team is currently in fourth place after shooting a combined 10-under par 566 on Saturday during the first two rounds of the Don Puckette National Invitational Tournament at the Omni National Golf Club. The Aztecs posted scores of 279 and 287 on the par-72, 7,200 course and find themselves one strokes in back of third place New Mexico (-11) at the 10th annual event.

SDSU's starting five golfers finished within eight shots of one another, led by senior Tom Berry (New Haw, Surrey, England), who sank 10 birdies overall to finish the day in a tie for the ninth place at 3-under 141 on rounds of 73 and 68. Meanwhile, junior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.) sits two strokes behind in a tie for the 19th position at 1-under 143 after firing a season-low 68 in the first round followed by a 75 over the second 18 holes.

Sophomore Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) also had his putter working early, sinking eight birdies to fuel an opening-round 66, but was unable to overcome six bogeys during the afternoon session en route to a 78, finishing with a collective even-par 144 to tie for the 23rd spot, one stroke ahead of freshman Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), who posted rounds of 72 and 73 to tie for 29th at 1-over 145.

Junior James Holley (Chatsworth, Calif.) struggled with three double-bogeys on his way to an opening-round 78, but came strong with a 71 in the afternoon, highlighted by four birdies, to wind up in a tie for 56th at 5-over 149.

The Aztecs were also represented by freshman Robert Gojuangco (San Diego, Calif.), an individual competitor who offset two double-bogeys with eight birdies overall to tie for 61st at 3-over 147.

Oklahoma State (-17) heads into Sunday's final round with a slim one-shot lead over TCU (-16), while New Mexico (-11), SDSU (-10) and Arkansas (-7) round out the top five. On the individual leaderboard, Julien Brun of TCU (-11) tops the field of 90 golfers, while Oklahoma State's Ian Davis (-8) occupies the No. 2 spot.

The Don Puckette NIT concludes on Sunday, as the Aztecs are slated to tee off with TCU, Arkansas and New Mexico State beginning at 8 a.m.
