SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team started off the San Diego Classic I with a sweep Thursday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (16-12) defeated Bryant, 13-6, before shutting out San Jose State, 2-0.

In the opener, junior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) was 3-for-3 with a grand slam, five RBIs, two runs and two walks in SDSU's 13-6 win over the Bulldogs (2-6).

Senior Tiffany Corder (San Clemente, Calif.) (3 R, RBI, 3B, BB), senior Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) (2 RBIs, R, 2B, BB), junior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) (RBI), sophomore Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) (2B, R, BB) and freshman Kayla Bufardeci (Castro Valley, Calif.) (RBI) added two hits apiece for San Diego State, which tied its season high in both hits (15) and runs (13).

Freshman Monica Downey (San Diego/Madison HS) scored two runs with a single and a walk, while redshirt freshman Victoria Kobold (Concord, Calif.) had two runs and three walks.

Freshman left-hander Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) improved to 7-5 on the season after allowing six runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings. She had a career-high nine strikeouts.

In the nightcap, senior right-hander Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) tossed a complete game five-hit shutout in the Aztecs' 2-0 win over the Spartans (14-10). She struck out five without issuing a walk. Arbino now has three solo shutouts on the season and four overall (one combined).

SDSU got its first run in the bottom of the second inning when freshmen Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) and Downey had back-to-back singles and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Kobold. Jordan then hit a deep fly ball to center field to plate Ruiz and give San Diego State the 1-0 lead.

The Aztecs added an insurance run in the fourth as Downey's infield single scored junior Stefani Polonia (Pico Rivera, Calif./Towson Univ.).

Ruiz and Downey each went 2-for-3, while Jackson had a double and a walk.

SDSU continues its stretch of seven games in five days with a solo contest against Buffalo at 7 p.m. Friday at the Santee Softball Complex in Santee, Calif.
