Men's Golf Leads after Day One at San Diego Classic

CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf team stands in first place after shooting a 2-under 574 in the first two rounds of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic on Monday in Chula Vista, Calif.

Three Aztecs are currently in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard at the two-day, 54-hole tournament being played at tne par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club. Austin Kaiser is tied for second place after shooting a 3-under 141 for the day. The junior from Atascadero, Calif., shot a 72 on the first round and followed it up with a 69 on the back nine, which was the best round for any Aztec on Monday. Sophomore teammate Xander Schauffele is only one stroke behind Kaiser and in a tie for fourth place overall with a 2-under 142, while Tom Berry is tied for ninth with an even 144.

Freshman Riccardo Michelini is tied for 18th with a 2-over 147, junior James Holley is tied for 24th with a 4-over 148, and freshmen Robert Gojuangco and Kevin Ko are both in a six-way tie for 35th-place with a score of 7-over 151. Senior Cameron Tennant, an individual competitor is in a 10-way tie for 41sth with an 8-over 152.

TCU is in second place and three strokes behind SDSU, while Arizona State and Texas Tech are tied for third and UT Arlington is fifth. San Diego's Grant Forrest leads the field after shooting a 6-under 138. Forrest shot a 70 in the first round before a tournament-best 68 in the second round.

The final 18 holes of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic will be contested on Tuesday, beginning at 8 a.m. PT with tee times on holes 1 and 10. The Aztecs will be paired with Arizona State and TCU, starting at 9:30 a.m.
