FRESNO, Calif. - The San Diego State softball team ended the Fresno State Classic with a 9-5 loss to No. 23/rv Oregon State Sunday in Fresno, Calif. The Aztecs dropped to 12-12 on the season with nine of their losses coming to nationally ranked schools.

SDSU had the early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first and one each in the third and fourth, respectively.

In the first, sophomore Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) (single) and junior Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) (hit by pitch) each reached base safely and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by senior Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.). Junior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) then singled up the middle to score the first two runs of the game.

San Diego State used a two-out rally in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Redshirt freshman Victoria Kobold (Concord, Calif.) drew a seven-pitch walk and Jordan followed with a single. Mathis then doubled to left-center field to score Kobold.

In the fifth, Bauer led off with a double and was replaced by junior Dominique Dinner (Monterey, Calif.). Senior Kristin May (Corona, Calif.) ripped a double to center to score Dinner and was subbed out by junior pinch runner Stefani Polonia (Pico Rivera, Calif./Towson Univ.). The Aztecs, however, couldn't get Polonia home as they went strikeout, foulout and strikeout to end the threat.

The missed opportunities would hurt SDSU as OSU scored eight runs in the bottom half to take a lead it would never relinquish. In the inning, Oregon State had eight hits and a walk, and took advantage of a San Diego State error.

The Aztecs inched closer in the sixth when Jordan tripled to left-center field and scored on a groundout by Mathis.

The Beavers got a run back in the bottom half of the sixth on an RBI groundout.

SDSU pressured again in the seventh after Kristin May (single) and junior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) (walk) each reached with no outs. Freshman Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) came in for Jackson, but both May and Ruiz would stay stranded as San Diego State would go down with a flyout and two lineouts to end the game.

It was a common theme in for the Aztecs as they were 4-for-17 (.235) in the game with runners on base and 3-for-15 (.200) with runners in scoring position. SDSU tied its season high with 10 runners left on base.

Jordan was 3-for-4 with two runs, while Bauer and Kristin May each had two hits. Kobold drew two walks and scored a run.

Senior right-hander Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk over four innings. She had three strikeouts. Freshman left-hander Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) pitched the final two innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks, while striking out one.

San Diego State plays host to Iona at 7 p.m. PT Tuesday.
