SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team outhit Long Beach State, 11-9, but gave up two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in a 5-4 loss Friday night at SDSU Softball Stadium.

The San Diego State softball team outhit Long Beach State, 11-9, but gave up two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in a 5-4 loss Friday night at SDSU Softball Stadium.

The Aztecs (9-8), who rallied from 2-0 and a 3-2 deficits earlier in the game, took their first lead in the top of the sixth when senior Kamerin May's (Corona, Calif.) infield single scored redshirt freshman Victoria Kobold (Concord, Calif.) from third base.

In the bottom half of the inning, the 49ers (9-6) loaded the bases with no outs before Emily Gregorio blooped a floating single down the right field line to score a pair of runs. SDSU freshman pitcher Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) settled down and got three straight outs on a groundout and two strikeouts to end LBSU's run.

San Diego State, however, went down in order in the seventh on a flyout and two hard-hit lineouts to end the game.

Junior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) had three of the Aztecs' 11 hits and scored a run, while sophomore Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) had two hits, an RBI and a stolen base. Senior Kristin May (Corona, Calif.) added two singles and a walk.

Senior Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) and freshman Monica Downey (San Diego/Madison HS) each had RBIs for SDSU, which left nine runners on base for the game. Juniors Dominique Dinner (Monterey, Calif.) and Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) also scored a run.

O'Toole (3-4) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits and a walk over an inning of relief. She struck out two. Senior Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) started the game and left with the lead after giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits over five innings without issuing a walk.

San Diego State continues its play in the San Diego Classic I tomorrow with a game against Utah State at 4:30 p.m. PT. The game will be the Aztecs' annual "Pink Game" to raise awareness for breast cancer. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to help SDSU strike out breast cancer.
