Cal Classic Final Results in PDF Format
PLEASANTON, Calif. - The San Diego State women's golf team climbed one spot on Tuesday, finishing in third place at the inaugural Cal Classic on the par-72, 6,243-yard Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton, Calif. The Aztecs shaved three strokes off their first-round score, carding a 297 for a two-day aggregate of 21-over par 597 en route to their highest tournament finish of the 2012-13 campaign.
Individually, sophomore transfer Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who began the day in a tie for second, wound up fifth in the field of 60 golfers after firing a 2-over 74 for a two-round total of 1-over 145 in her second event ever for the Aztecs. Despite slipping seven places, junior Amy Alston (Mission Viejo, Calif.) also posted a top-20 finish, tying for 14th at 5-over 149, following a final round 76.
Conversely, Christine Wong (Richmond, British Columbia) made the biggest improvement for SDSU, vaulting 19 spots to tie for 18th overall after posting the team's low round of the day with an even-par 72. The Aztec senior overcame an opening-round 79, offsetting three bogeys with three birdies on Tuesday to finish the tournament at 7-over 151, one shot ahead of freshman Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden), who fired a final-round 75 to tie for 22nd at 8-over 152.
Stanford (+10) came away with the team title, as the No. 13 Cardinal bested 14th-ranked Arizona State (+16) by six strokes, while SDSU took third ahead of No. 11 UC Davis (+23) and 40th-ranked UNLV (+27). First-round leader Noemi Jimenez of Arizona State took home medalist honors after finishing at 5-under 139, while UNLV's Dana Finkelsten, Demi Runas of UC Davis and Stanford's Mariko Tumangan tied for second on the individual leaderboard at even-par 144, followed by the Aztecs' Spiranac.
SDSU returns to the course next week when it competes in the Bruin Wave Invitational, co-hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine, at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif.
