SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's golf team returns to the course this week when it heads to the Bay Area for the inaugural Cal Classic, Feb. 25-26, in Pleasanton, Calif. The Aztecs are one of 11 schools scheduled to compete in the two-day, 36-hole tournament, which commences on Monday at 9 a.m. PT on the par-72, 6,203-yard Ruby Hill Golf Club.
SDSU will be paired with host California and Arizona State for the first round, with the final 18 holes to be completed on Tuesday. The field also includes squads from Coastal Carolina, Fresno State, Oregon State, San Francisco, San Jose State, Stanford, UC Davis and UNLV.
Second-year head coach Leslie Spalding's starting lineup features freshman Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden), the reigning Mountain West golfer of the week, along with senior Christine Wong (Richmond, British Columbia), junior Maureen Dunnagan (Lexington, S.C.) and sophomores Amy Alston (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.).
The Aztecs are coming off a fourth-place team finish in their last outing at The Gold Rush, Feb. 11-12, in Yorba Linda, Calif., where Henrikson and Wong cracked the top 10 on the individual leaderboard. Henrikson placed third with a three-round total of 10-over 226, while Wong tied for the 10th spot at 19-over 235.
For the season, Henrikson leads SDSU with a 75.13 stroke average through 15 rounds, which ranks sixth in the Mountain West, followed by Wong, who is tied for 11th with an average of 76.00
Following the Cal Classic, the Aztecs will be back in action next week when they participate in the Bruin Wave Invitational, March 4-5, at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif.
