CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Redshirt senior Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) struck out a career-high 12 batters in a five-hit shutout to lift the San Diego State softball team to a 3-0 win over Syracuse Friday night at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.

A right-hander, Arbino (6-3) fanned the 12 over seven innings of scoreless ball. She allowed just five hits (all singles) and a walk, while recording her third double-digit strikeout game of the season. Coming into her senior year, Arbino's previous high in a game was nine, which she had done on four occasions.

Ten of Arbino's 12 strikeouts were swinging with the other two looking. She had two in the first inning, two in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

Arbino also pitched SDSU (7-6) out of a few jams, including bases loaded in the first with no outs, where she settled down and got the Orange (3-3) out via a strikeout looking, strikeout swinging and a flyout to end the threat. Arbino also ran into some trouble in the fifth after yielding a single and a walk before recording an out. Arbino then got two swinging strikeouts and a groundout to keep the shutout intact.

Arbino was backed by a strong offense, which had eight hits, including three doubles. Junior Katie Mathis (Green Valley, Calif.) led the way with two hits, including an RBI double in the fourth, and a run scored.

Junior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) added an RBI double, while classmates Dominique Dinner (Monterey, Calif.) and Stefani Polonia (Pico Rivera, Calif./Towson Univ.) each scored solo runs. Sophomore Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) singled and drew a walk for San Diego State.

The Aztecs meet Ohio State at 12:30 p.m. PT Saturday before playing No. 9/11 Oregon at 2 p.m. Sunday.
