SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - After defeating a ranked opponent last weekend, the No. 64 San Diego State Men's Tennis team was unable to repeat its performance on Saturday, losing its dual match to No. 57 Cal Poly, 6-1.
"It was a tough day on the road," SDSU head coach Gene Carswell said.
The SDSU No. 2 doubles team of senior Derek Siddiqui and sophomore Andranik Khachatryan earned an 8-5 doubles victory over Matt Thomsen and Gannon Daynes, but it wasn't enough to win the doubles point. The Aztecs No. 1 team of sophomore Thorsten Bertsch and junior Hunter Nicholas had a narrow defeat to the Cal Poly duo of Andre Dome and Jordan Bridge, 8-7 (4), while the No. 3 team of sophomore Spencer Simon and junior Shiva Sangwan fell to Marco Comuzzo and Naveen Beasley, 8-5.
Bertsch picked up the Aztecs only singles victory in the No. 2 spot, defeating Comuzzo 7-6 (6), 6-2. The remaining SDSU singles players each lost in straight sets, including Siddiqui, the current Mountain West Player of the Week, and No. 123 Khachatryan. Siddiqui lost to No. 89 Dome, 6-1, 6-2, in No.1 singles, while Khachatryan fell to Derek Klein, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 4 slot.
The next match for SDSU (3-2) is on the road at Fresno State on Friday, Feb. 8, beginning at 2 p.m. PT.
