LA QUINTA, Calif. - The San Diego State men's golf squad is in ninth place after the first round of The Prestige at PGA WEST was suspended due to darkness on Monday in La Quinta, Calif. Collectively, the Aztecs sit at 4-over par and are one of seven teams in the 15-school field slated to complete the opening 18 holes on Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m.
Individually, the Aztecs' Tom Berry (New Haw, Surrey, England) is currently tied for 12th at 1-under par with 11 other golfers. The SDSU senior overcame a bogey on sixth hole with back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th before play was halted. Two Aztecs also finished on No. 12 Monday, as freshman Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) finds himself tied for 35th at 1-over, while sophomore Xander Schauffele (San Diego, Calif.) is tied for 51st at 2-over, along with junior Austin Kaiser (Atascadero, Calif.), who ended the day on the 14th hole. Rounding out the SDSU contingent is senior Cameron Tennant (Woodland Hills, Calif.) occupies the 80th position after firing a 7-over through 15 holes.
Five of the current top six teams completed the first round before darkness fell on the par-71, 7,046-yard Greg Norman Resort Course. TCU (-6) owns a one-shot lead over USC (-5), while Oklahoma State, UCLA and Texas Tech are tied for fourth at 1-over. In addition, Washington finds itself in the No. 3 spot after shooting a combined 4-under through 15 holes.
Second-round action at The Prestige at PGA WEST will commence Tuesday following the completion of round one, with the final 18 holes to be contested on Wednesday.
