SDSU-OKLAHOMA HIGHLIGHTS

SAN DIEGO - Sophomore Kayla Jordan's (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) two-out home run in the top of the seventh triggered a three-run inning for the San Diego State softball team, which topped Cal Poly, 5-2, to salvage a split Friday night at the 23rd annual Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium. Earlier in the night the Aztecs (4-4) lost to No. 2/1 Oklahoma, 4-0.

In the nightcap, SDSU jumped right on the Mustangs in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs on three consecutive hits with two outs. Senior Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) got things going with a home run over the left field fence, her first of the season and sixth of her career. Junior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) followed with her first career triple before redshirt junior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) plated her with a single to left field.

Cal Poly answered in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of two San Diego State errors. The first run came when Cami Brown scored on Jillian Andersen fielder's choice RBI. Later in the inning, Kim Westlund drove in Ashley Romano with a single.

The Aztecs had a chance to take the lead in the sixth after loading the bases with one out. A double play, however, ended the threat, keeping the game tied at 2-2.

After two quick outs in the seventh, Jordan belted a high carrying ball over the right field fence to put SDSU in the lead for good. It was the first homer of the season and second of the career for the 2012 Mountain West Freshman of the Year.

Freshman Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) reached on a Mustang (1-7) error and May followed with her fourth hit of the game. Bauer then walked to load the bases, before Jackson ripped a two-run double off the centerfield wall for the final runs of the game.

After giving up two hits with one out, San Diego State starting pitcher Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) was replaced by freshman Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.). O'Toole managed to get Ashley Romano to pop up weakly toward third base. The Aztecs, however, were unable to get the ball in the air and instead freshman third baseman Kayla Bufardeci (Castro Valley, Calif.) tossed it to freshman shortstop Monica Downey (San Diego/Madison HS), who was covering third base. Downey tagged third and quickly threw it to freshman second baseman Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) to end the game on the double play.

Kamerin May was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI to lead the offense. Jackson doubled, singled and drove in three runs, while Bauer tripled, walked and scored a run.

Arbino (4-2) got the win after giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks over 6 1/3 innings. She struck out six. O'Toole needed just two pitches to earn her first career save.

In the opener, SDSU held the Sooners (7-0) to their fewest runs of the season, but couldn't get a run across the plate in the 4-0 loss. OU had come into the game outscoring the opposition, 57-7, through its first six contests.

Oklahoma scored two runs in the first inning and two more in the third, but that was it as San Diego State's O'Toole stranded eight Sooners for the game. O'Toole (0-2) ended up allowing the four runs on nine hits and two walks over seven innings, while striking out six.

Kristin May (two singles) and Kamerin May (one single) had all three of the Aztecs' hits. Junior Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) was the only other SDSU player to reach base safely with a walk.

OU's Keilani Ricketts, the reigning USA Softball Player of the Year, struck out nine, while giving up three hits and a walk over the complete game shutout.

San Diego State continues its play in the Campbell/Cartier Classic Saturday against Notre Dame at 6 p.m. PT.
