SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's basketball team received double-digit scoring totals from five players en route to a 72-51 victory over Savannah State Wednesday at Viejas Arena. Senior forward Gabrielle Clark (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored a career-high 13 points, including a 3-for-4 effort from 3-point range, as the Aztecs (9-4) closed out the non-conference portion of their 2012-13 schedule on a winning note.
In addition to Clark's performance, SDSU received the first collegiate double-double from sophomore forward Khristina Hunter (Fairfield, Calif.) who tallied 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting to go along with a career-best 14 rebounds, while senior Courtney Clements (Long Beach, Calif.), sophomore forward Erimma Amarikwa (Vacaville, Calif.) and sophomore guard Ahjalee Harvey (Mountain View, Calif.) added 10 apiece.
Conversely, the Lady Tigers (5-9) were led by Blessing Uba's game-high 15 points, while Andrietta Thomas (11 pts.), Jasmine Norman (10 pts.) and Charmaine Greene (10 pts.) reached double figures as well in the loss.
Despite getting out-rebounded by a 41-37 margin, the Aztecs outscored Savannah State 40-18 in the paint and maintained a 19-9 edge in second-chance points. In addition, SDSU limited the Lady Tigers to just four field goals in the first half to build an insurmountable 35-11 lead by intermission.
A triple by Clark and jumper by Hunter opened the scoring for the Scarlet and Black, but Savannah State responded with consecutive baskets by Greene and Uba to trim the margin to 5-4 at the 16:58 mark. That would be as close as the visitors would get the rest of the way, however, as Savannah State was kept off the scoreboard until an Alexandria Taylor free throw with 6:07 remaining. Two buckets by Amarikwa and a layup by Hunter quickly upped the Aztecs' lead to 32-5, putting the host school in complete control with 4:36 left on the clock.
The Lady Tigers managed to make things somewhat respectable following the break, connecting on 15 of 33 field-goal attempts in the second half (45.5 percent). A 31-21 run pulled Savannah State to within 56-42 with 6:07 to go following a pair of Norman foul shots, but the deficit proved too much to overcome. A triple by Clements with 2:28 left on the clock capped an 11-5 spurt that restored SDSU's lead back to 20 at 67-47.
For the game, the Aztecs finished with a 47.5 percent field-goal percentage (29-61), with Hunter, Clark and Amarikwa combining to shoot 15-for-20 from the floor.
SDSU will now have a week off before opening Mountain West play on Wednesday, Jan. 9, when it plays host to Fresno State at Viejas Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m. PT.
