June 20, 2012

SAN DIEGO - All 18 athletic programs at San Diego State exceeded the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) standards issued by the NCAA on Wednesday. The most recent data is for the 2010-11 academic year and included figures for 18 of the school's 19 athletic programs. SDSU's newest team, women's lacrosse, was not included as that program started competing this past spring.

Every Division I sports team calculates its APR each academic year based on the eligibility and retention of each scholarship student-athlete. Teams scoring below certain thresholds can face sanctions, such as scholarship losses and restrictions on practice. Rates reflect the past four seasons of performances with Wednesday's latest multi-year score being based on the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.

San Diego State had 10 programs increase their multi-year score from the previous year. Of the other eight programs, six had a drop of seven points or less in the multi-year category. The largest drop in multi-year rate was to volleyball, which carried over a perfect score from the 2009-10 report and is currently at 984, comfortably above the threshold.

Last week, the NCAA recognized the Aztecs' cross country program for scoring among the top 10 percent in the country. In addition, three programs - men's tennis, women's tennis and swimming and diving received perfect single-year scores of 1,000.

Nationally, according to the latest APR figures, 15 teams will not have access to the postseason for the 2012-13 season. In terms of penalties, 35 teams with APRs below 900 (out of 54) are facing sanctions next season including restrictions on practice and regular season competition, reductions in scholarships and other penalties. All 15 teams that lost postseason access also face additional APR penalties.

San Diego State is coming off the most successful campaign in school history, with a record nine teams making it to NCAA postseason play. This past month, the men's golf program finished fifth nationally, while outdoor track and field tied for ninth in the country. Other programs that advanced to NCAA postseason play in 2011-12 included men's basketball, women's basketball, football, women's golf, swimming and diving, softball and indoor track and field.

The Aztecs continued to excel in football and men's basketball this past year. The football program advanced to its second consecutive bowl game, joining Stanford as the only programs in the state to accomplish the feat in both 2010 and 2011. The men's basketball team, meanwhile, advanced to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament. Since the beginning of the 2010-11 academic year, San Diego State owns the nation's best combined football and men's basketball record in the country at 77-20 (79.4 percent).

SDSU was one of just 16 schools in the nation in 2011-12 to have its football program play in a bowl game and its men's and women's basketball programs both advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Aztecs' combined record in those three sports was 59-20 (74.7 percent), the sixth-best winning percentage in the country.
