SAN DIEGO - Members of the San Diego State softball team volunteered at the "Shop With a Jock" event Tuesday night at the Target in Mission Valley.

The Aztecs teamed with other local professional and collegiate athletes in the area to shop with 250 children. The children who were picked had to write an essay to take part in the event and were rewarded with a $100 Target gift card, which was used to shop for others.

The team had a great time and was happy to reach out to the community once again. Last month, the SDSU softball team volunteered at The Color Run, which benefitted The Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County.

In the past, San Diego State has participated in Habitat For Humanity, food and stuffed animal drives, volunteering at a soup kitchen and more.

The Aztecs are coming off a 32-24 season in 2012, advancing to the NCAA tournament for a school-record fifth consecutive year and capturing their fifth Mountain West title. SDSU went 2-2 in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional before being eliminated in the regional championship game for the second straight year, falling just short of the NCAA Super Regionals (equivalent to the Sweet 16). San Diego State finished with single-season program records in slugging percentage (.466), doubles (79), home runs (58), RBIs (237) and total bases (692), and received votes in both national polls.

The Aztecs kick off their 2013 slate in Tempe, Ariz., when they compete in Arizona State's Kajikawa Classic from Feb. 7-9. Two of SDSU's five games at the classic will be against 2012 NCAA tournament teams, including Northwestern (Feb. 8) and Women's College World Series qualifier Arizona (Feb. 9). San Diego State also plays Creighton (Feb. 7), Stephen F. Austin (Feb. 8) and Western Michigan (Feb. 9).
