SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team finished No. 7 in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America rankings. SDSU amassed a 21-2-1 record in 2012, which tied with Stanford for the best win percentage (.896) in the NCAA this season.
In the final Ratings Percentage Index, the Aztecs finished with an RPI of 3 behind National Champion North Carolina (2) and Stanford (1). The only other Mountain West teams in the top 100 were UNLV (70) and New Mexico (77).
As a team in the NCAA rankings, the Aztecs ranked 11th in goals-against average (0.61), while tying for 16th in shutout percentage (0.54). These numbers resulted in a number of defensive honors for SDSU, highlighted by junior Haley Palmer, redshirt senior Tiffany Hurst and junior Carli Johnson each garnering NSCAA all-Pacific Region honors.
On an individual level, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Boaz, an NSCAA all-Pacific Region first-team honoree, ranked No. 16 in goals-against average (0.60) in 2102:53 minutes played, which was the 13th most for a goalie in 2012. Senior forward Megan Jurado, meanwhile, also garnered first team accolades after she tied for fourth in the nation with seven game-winning goals, T-15th in total points (39), T-17th in total goals (15) and T-17th in points-per-game (1.63).
The Aztecs had quite a magical run in 2012. SDSU advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in program history and finished its season with a school-record 21 victories. In addition to the aforementioned records, the Aztecs set a few more. The 2012 squad had the fewest losses (two), the highest winning-percentage (89.6) and also tied the school record with 13 shutouts, equaling the 1998 team's performance.
