SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior tight end Gavin Escobar was an honorable mention selection to the Pro Football Weekly 2012 All-America team released earlier this week.
PFW's All-America team annually honors college football's most talented players, which is based on extensive evaluation and considerable feedback from NFL evaluators. It takes into consideration how players grade out both in their assignments and by the quality of critical playing traits. Production is considered, but not weighed as heavily as how much of an impact a player makes on their team. Extra attention is paid to traits such as toughness, intelligence and competitiveness, which are traits the publication believes correlate heavily to future NFL success.
Escobar led the Aztecs in receptions (41), receiving yards (519) and touchdown catches (6) this season, and has 10 receptions of 20 yards or more. The junior is a three-time all-Mountain West selection, including first-team honors each of the past two seasons. Over his career, Escobar has 121 receptions (17th in program history), 1,622 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns.
Winners of seven consecutive games, SDSU (9-3) will play Brigham Young (7-5) on Dec. 20 in the Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium. San Diego State finished 7-1 in Mountain West play for a share of the league title, its 19th overall and first 1998.
