SAN DIEGO -

The San Diego State rowing team returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Newport Harbor for the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival (NARF). The outing will mark the second time Aztecs will take to the water this season.

The regatta is the largest of the Fall season and will draw some of the top teams on the West Coast, including crews from UCLA, USC, Loyola Marymount and University of San Diego. The Aztecs will compete in the Women's Open Eight at 8 a.m. PT and the Women's Frosh/Novice 8+ at 9:15 a.m. PT.

The Newport Autumn Rowing Festival is one of the premier fall rowing events in Southern California. The races cover 2.8 miles (4,500 meters) through Newport Harbor. In this race, competitors begin the course staggered and compete for the best time.

The Aztecs have tasted success at previous NARF regattas, as SDSU boats have garnered first-place finishes in the Frosh/Novice 8+ in 2009, Women's Open 4+ in 2008 and Women's Open 8+ in 2006. Last season, four of San Diego State's six entries placed in the upper half of their respective divisions. SDSU's best result a year ago came in the Frosh/Novice 8+ races, where the SDSU "A" boat captured fifth of 22 entries that competed on the 4,400 yard (2.7 miles) course. In that same race, the Aztecs "B" boat captured ninth place in 22:06. In the Women's Open 8+ category, San Diego State's "B" and "A" boats finished 12th and 13th respectively in a field that included 28 entries. The Aztec "B" crew covered the course in 18:23, with the "A" boat just five second behind at 18:28.
