BOISE, Idaho -- The No. 10/14/13 San Diego State women's soccer team continued Mountain West action on Friday evening as it defeated Boise State, 1-0, at the Boas Soccer Complex. With the victory, the Aztecs improve to 11-1-1 and 2-0 in MW action, while the Broncos drop to 5-8-1 and 0-2 in conference play.
Sarah Halverson scored the game-winner for SDSU at the 72:33 mark as the senior was assisted by sophomore Haley Locker and redshirt senior Tiffany Hurst. It marks Halverson's first goal in 2012 and the eighth of her career.
Boise State notched the first shot of the game at 1:33 mark, but the Aztecs responded with a shot of their own in the 5th minute as Locker fired an attempt toward goal that required a save from Bronco goalkeeper Maddy McDevitt. The rest of the first half was a back-and-forth affair as each team tallied five shots in the period. The Aztecs, however, held the 2-0 advantage in shots on goal and looked to be in control of the contest.
SDSU came out in the second half looking to take command as it notched consecutive shots in the 54th minute. Locker was first to tally an attempt as her shot just missed as it hit the post. Senior Megan Jurado then had a shot miss to the right.
After another attempt from Locker at the 65:07 mark, the Aztecs found the back of the net in the 73rd minute. Halverson found herself in perfect position as the ball was crossed from the right wing and after being deflected, the Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., native fired a shot and connected.
Boise State would tally two more shots, but neither would be on goal as SDSU was ultimately victorious. On the game, the Aztecs held a 10-9 advantage in shots (4-0 in shots on goal) and also won the possession battle by a 57-43 margin. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Boaz played all 90 minutes in net en route to her 11th win and seventh shutout victory of 2012.
The Aztecs will now travel to No. rv/--/23 Portland for a non-conference game on Sunday at 2 p.m. MT.
